Before CGI and motion capture companions, Bollywood’s most memorable supporting cast often walked on 4 legs or flew on two wings. From Tuffy reuniting lovers to Moti avenging his master’s murder and Dhanno becoming the silent confidante of Basanti. These animals weren’t background props. They drove plots, delivered laughs and in some cases became blogger fan favourites than the human character themselves. Whether it was carrying love letters, helping heroes, or fighting villains they were an integral part of the story.
Some became loyal Companions, others became heroes, and few even earned separate screen credits for their performances. From Dhano, to Tuffy, to Moti, these furry and feathered stars won hearts across generations.
At a time when filmmakers relied on trained animals instead of CGI , every appearance felt authentic. Adding warmth, humour and emotion to the screen. Decades later audience may not remember them, but they certainly remember the horse that basanti spoke to, the pigeon that delivered love letters and the dog who became symbol of unwavering devotion
Here’s a nostalgic look at ten filmi pets that proved you don’t need dialogues to become bollywood legend.
Dhanno – Sholay
If there is one horse every bollywood fan knows by the name it’s Dhanno. As Basanti’ trusted mare, she wasn’t just a mode of transport but a constant companion through the rugged terrain of Ramgarh. Dhanno appeared in some of the most energetic scenes of the film. Basani’s endless conversations with Dhanno, including the unforgettable line, “chal dhanno, aaj teri basanti ki izzat ka sawal hai”, turned the horse into a cultural icon in her own right.

But Dhanno’s real magic lay in the fact that she seemed to fit so well into the story. She reacted to danger, she answered Basanti’s call. And she even helped raise the stakes of the movie during the scenes of the chase. In the end, movie goers even started viewing Dhanno in a similar manner to the way they viewed other supporting characters in the movie. In fact, people would continue talking about what happened to Dhanno even after the movie ended.
Allah Rakha – Coolie
Amitabh Bachchan had a cool bird in his movie — Coolie, Allah Rakha. This bird was introduced in an interesting way with a famous line that said “Bachpan se hai sar pe Allah ka haath aur Allah Rakha hai apne saath.” Allah Rakha was like a part of Amitabh Bachchan. The bird would do things like take guns from bad people or distract them when Amitabh Bachchan was fighting.

Sometimes Allah Rakha would just show up on Amitabh Bachchan’s arm. Allah Rakha was not a trained bird, it meant a lot of things like being loyal and brave and protective. That is why Allah Rakha is one of the remembered birds in Hindi movies. Amitabh Bachchan and Allah Rakha made a team and people still love watching them on screen.
Moti — Teri Meherbaniya

Moti was not only a pet but the heart of Teri Meherbaniyan emotionally. The loyal Moti does not give up on his owner when she is killed and takes on the task of seeking out and punishing all those responsible for her death. The dog laments, participates in the mourning rituals, burns the dead body, and finally catches every villain involved in it. Without speaking any line, Moti managed to convey the emotions of grief, loyalty, and bravery through his performances. His role in the movie became so important that he was awarded separate credit in the credits section.
The Elephant Brothers – Hathi Mere Saathi

The elephants in Haathi Mere Saathi were not just trained animals; they were considered part of the family of Rajesh Khanna. They helped him to make a living, keep him safe, and be by his side throughout the journey of life. Every elephant had its own character, therefore giving the story a realistic and heartfelt touch. The friendship between them was the core of the movie and showed the themes of loyalty, empathy, and unending love. Decades have passed since then, but Haathi Mere Saathi is still considered one of the most loved movies of Bollywood on the subject.
Handsome – Maine pyaar kiya

Before texting existed, Bollywood lovers relied on Handsome, the loveable pigeon from Maine Pyaar Kiya. Acting as Prem and Suman’s messenger. Handsome carried their romance alive despite all the obstacles between them. The bird especially became famous through the song ‘ Kabootar Ja Ja Ja Ja’. handsome played a key role in bringing the lovers together. In a rare honour, the pigeon even received screen credit by name, earning a special place in bollywood history.
Tuffy – Hum aapke hai koun

Tuffy was easily the most lovable member of the family in hum Aapke hai koun more than just a cute pet. Tuffy played an important role in the story by carrying shoes during wedding festivities, entertaining everyone with his famous cricket umpire act and accidentally delivering a letter that changed the course of the film. His playful expressions and impeccable timing added humour and warmth to every scene. Tuffy’s popularity made him one of the most recognised dogs in VBollywood and a favourite among audiences of all ages.
Bajrangi – Aankhen

Sharing screen with Govinda and Chunky Pandey is no small feat, but the monkey named Bajrangi certainly made sure to deliver many laughs. Bajrangi, the playful third element of the trio, had become a key ingredient to the slapstick comedy in the movie. Whatever he did, whether it was imitating human beings, ruining plans, or simply making faces, Bajrangi certainly ensured that people remained amused by him all through the movie. Such was his comedy timing that Bajrangi actually turned out to be one of the most notable elements of the movie.
The Crocodile – Shaan

As compared to the cute animals featured in this list, the crocodile from Shaan was one that meant danger and fear. Residing in the underground hideout of the villain named Shaakaal, it acted as his dangerous tool for anyone who ever betrayed him. The victims would be put in front of the crocodile’s pool using rotating chairs. Although this character did not have many scenes, its appearance made the movie more thrilling and also portrayed the ruthless nature of Shaakaal. The crocodile became a memorable part of one of Bollywood’s most popular villains.
Chillar Party (2011)

Unlike the larger-than-life heroes often seen in Bollywood, the children from Chillar Party (2011) proved that courage does not depend on age. When a street boy and his dog face an unfair threat, a group of carefree kids decides to stand up for what is right. Their journey is filled with friendship, humour, teamwork, and determination, making the story both entertaining and heartwarming. Although the film revolves around children, its message about unity, compassion, and speaking against injustice made it a memorable coming-of-age classic in Bollywood. I still remember watching this movie, and i loved thi movie to an extent that i was ready to rebel to adopt a street dog. But that’s a completely different story and let’s not go there. For now lets talk about this beautiful children movie, thinking about this movie just makes me nostalgic and i just go back to my childhood days. This movie gave birth to the animal lover inside me and i will still carry the fire inside me that chilllar party sparked. Bhidu – the dog was hands down the best bollywood filmi pet.
Pluto Mehra – Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)
Unlike the loyal animals that take center stage in many Bollywood films, the dog Pluto Mehra in Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) serves as the witty narrator of the story. As the Mehra family’s pet, Pluto silently observes the emotional conflicts, hidden tensions, and complicated relationships unfolding during a luxury cruise. His humorous yet insightful commentary adds a unique perspective while highlighting the contrast between appearances and reality. Although Pluto is not the central character, his narration became one of the film’s most memorable elements and gave the family drama a fresh and entertaining touch.
For most of us, Dil Dhadakne Do will always be remembered for the star studded cast in the movie, but not for me because Pluto Mehra stole the show. He doesn’t interact with anyone in the movie but manages to get the pulse of every individual in the family. This is what made Pluto unique. He observes everybody without judging them. While the Mehras are bickering, hiding their feelings, and putting up a façade of perfection, Pluto just sticks by their side. His narration made the movie seem so real and strangely soothing.

During my first viewing of the movie, it amazed me how much attention I paid to Pluto. It was very soothing to see him look at each and every family member. It almost seemed like he knew more than they do about themselves. You will easily relate to this experience if you have ever had a pet in your life. They can’t help with your problems but somehow sense whenever something is going wrong. Pluto was like that. He didn’t require any action scene or a moment to save the day to make the movie seem more real. Just his presence was enough.
Entertainment – Entertainment
Entertainment was another typical comedy action and drama movie, at least this was my assumption before the premiere. But something really surprising happened, and it became clear that the main thing to take home from it would be the memory of the dog. Indeed, Tommy was not just a pet; he was the lawful heir of a billionaire. And this concept alone was enough to make everything in the movie amusing. All the characters were trying to get some money, while Tommy was staying absolutely the same as always; he was not greedy or boastful, he did not want anything except for love and attention.

This was the main reason why it was so easy to love Tommy. The boy never sought to be the center of attention, but each moment with him turned out to be the most exciting one. The innocence of his looks and fun made the whole film funny in its own way. Grown-ups tried to show themselves to a dog to become richer, and this was funny too. But, anyway, there was a serious message behind all the comedy money does not matter much to pets, as all they need is love.
